Renting a Panasonic projector sounds like a standard request. In practice, however, it is the technical depth that decides whether a projector performs or struggles in the venue. How much light output does my screen size require given the stage and ambient light? Which throw ratio does my installation distance allow? Are lens-shift reserves available for off-axis setups? Anyone looking to rent a Panasonic projector faces this question sooner or later. The answer does not depend on budget alone – it also depends on the requirements for colour fidelity, brightness and image content, e.g. X-ray images!
1-Chip DLP: sequential colour projection
A single DMD chip projects R, G and B in a time-sequential manner via a rotating colour wheel. With fast camera pans, recording setups or high viewer sensitivity, rainbow effects (brief colour fringes at high-contrast edges) can occur. For pure presentation and data-content applications, 1-chip DLP is technically fully sufficient.
3-Chip DLP: simultaneous RGB projection
Three separate DMD chips process the three colour channels in parallel. No colour wheel, no sequential “artefact issue”. This is the technical reason why Panasonic projectors of the RQ series from 25,000 lm onwards exclusively use 3-chip architectures. For broadcast control feeds, virtual production and anything recorded on camera, 3-chip is not a comfort feature – it is a requirement.

Resolution and signal chain: FullHD or 4K?
FullHD (1920 × 1080 pixels) is the right standard for most corporate events, conferences and presentations – provided the signal chain delivers what the projector promises. A common planning mistake: the device is FullHD-capable, but somewhere between source and projector the signal is degraded to 720p by an incorrectly configured scaler, splitter or matrix switch.
4K / UHD (3840 × 2160 pixels) becomes relevant when the viewing distance is small relative to the image width (under 6 m distance with over 6 m image width), when graphics or video material demand high detail density – for instance in product presentations or architectural simulations – or when the source material is natively 4K and downconversion makes no technical sense.
AV-Professional plans the signal path from source to screen as a whole. Anyone renting a 4K projector generally also needs 4K-capable distribution – HDBaseT, 12G-SDI or fibre. Both come from a single source with us, so the resolution isn’t lost halfway.
Light output, image size, ambient light: the planning formula
The most common misconception when renting a projector: the manufacturer’s light output figures apply under laboratory conditions. In practice we calculate with the following correction factors:
- Ambient light loss: Typical meeting rooms with residual light from windows or ceiling spotlights reduce perceived brightness by 30–50 %. A 6,000-lm device in a darkened room clearly outperforms a 10,000-lm device under daylight exposure.
- Laser degradation: Laser modules lose light output over their operating hours. Our rental units are regularly tested for lumen output – in our planning we work with real operating values, not with specification peak values.
- Lamp hours (lamp-based devices): For classic, non-laser DLP systems in the fleet the same logic applies even more strictly: from approx. 500 operating hours onwards the actual brightness deviates noticeably from the factory value. AV-Professional replaces lamps proactively before performance drops below event level.
- Screen gain factor: A standard matte-white screen with gain 1.0 reflects differently than a high-gain screen (gain 1.5–2.5) or an ALR surface (Ambient Light Rejecting). This significantly changes the effective image brightness with the same projector.
- Image size vs. lumen requirement: Rule of thumb for good legibility: 40–60 lm/m² of image area in a darkened room, 100–150 lm/m² with residual light. At 6 m image width (16:9) and residual light you therefore need at least 25,000 lm – a typical use case for the PT-RQ35K or PT-RZ31KEJ.
Throw distance and lens planning
When renting a Panasonic projector, the lens choice is often the underestimated parameter. The throw ratio (TR = projection distance / image width) determines which lens fits a given setup – and whether lens-shift reserves are available for off-axis mounting.
For this, Panasonic provides the official Throw Distance Calculator ↗. The tool calculates projection distance, image size, lens-shift values and projector position for all models and available lenses – exportable for rider planning and venue coordination.
- Supports all Panasonic models including the interchangeable ET lens series
- Outputs vertical and horizontal lens-shift as a percentage value – critical for ceiling and side-throw setups
- Calculates projector position (X/Y/Z) relative to the image centre – directly usable for truss and floor planning
- Takes the zoom range of the lens into account, not just the nominal throw value
For context, a calculation example: a lens with a throw ratio of 1.7–2.3 requires a distance of between 6.8 and 9.2 m from the image surface for a 4 m wide screen. Anyone who doesn’t work this out before the build ends up rerouting cables and repositioning trusses under time pressure.

Application scenarios in practice
The application matrix above shows the model level. Equally decisive is what demands the respective format places on the entire production:
- Corporate events / general meetings – large-format widescreen projection, dual fitting for centre and side screens, redundant signal feed; from 15,000 lm and 3-chip DLP as standard. For live transmission into breakout rooms, a full signal distribution architecture is added.
- Trade fairs / product presentations – bright exhibition halls with uncontrolled ambient light are the toughest discipline for projection. For stand areas under 50 m² we recommend LED wall technology instead – under these lighting conditions the technically more honest solution.
- Stage productions / live events – camera-optimised operation, edge-blending for multi-projector setups. If the stage works with Disguise, Pixera or comparable media servers, the coordinated calibration of all projectors is a requirement, not an optional step.
- Hybrid meetings / livestreams – the signal must go cleanly onto the screen and into the stream at the same time. Encoder and display use the same signal source, so no delay artefacts arise from parallel conversion paths.
- Congresses / conferences – multi-day formats with changing programme items need a universal signal chain that covers presentations, video conference feeds and live camera without changeover time between slots.
Multi-projector setups: edge blending in detail
As soon as a projection surface can no longer be covered by a single device – or several projectors are to show the same image for redundancy reasons – edge blending becomes the central discipline. The edge areas of several projectors are overlaid so that the overlap zone becomes invisible.
In practice this depends on several variables simultaneously: identical colour calibration of all involved devices, precise geometric alignment, a cleanly configured blend zone in the image processor – and a projection surface free of hotspots or uneven reflection. AV-Professional calibrates multi-projector setups with its own measurement equipment; white points and gamma curves of all devices are matched.
Signal redundancy: what happens if a device fails?
A question that is asked strikingly rarely in enquiries – and yet is the most important. A projection failure at a general meeting, a company anniversary or a product presentation is not a comfort problem but a reputation problem.
On request we plan fully redundant setups: a hot-backup projector on a separate signal path, automatic seamless switching on signal loss, redundant signal feed via independent lines. For the audience, the switching process is imperceptible.
Projector or LED wall? An honest decision aid
AV-Professional has both technologies in its fleet. As rough orientation:
A projector is the right choice for:
an existing projection surface, controllable lighting conditions, very large image formats on a limited budget, mapping requirements, or when the device must not be visible in the audience area.
An LED wall is superior for:
high ambient brightness with no option to darken the room, close viewing under 4 m distance (shadow casting!), integration into virtual production or XR setups, a missing throw distance, or permanent installations in continuous use.
