What is Virtual Production? Definition, Technology & Workflow
Virtual Production Simply Explained
Virtual Production combines classic film production with digital real-time technology. Actors and crew work in front of a large-format LED wall on which photorealistic backgrounds are rendered in real time β precisely synchronized with camera angle, lens, and movement. The result: finished scenes directly in camera, without greenscreen compositing in post.
In-Camera VFX (ICVFX) β How the LED Wall Technology Works
The heart of every virtual production is the In-Camera VFX system. The SONY VERONA LED wall with 1.5 mm pixel pitch delivers a resolution and brightness that impresses even at wide apertures and close-ups. The SONY OCELLUS camera tracking system captures camera position and movement in real time, adjusting the perspective of the background with pixel-perfect accuracy β for seamless integration of real foreground and digital set.
Unreal Engine in the Virtual Production Workflow
The real-time rendering engine (Unreal Engine with SONY software integration) makes it possible to modify digital worlds live β time of day, weather, camera moves, light incidence. Directors see the final image directly on the monitor. Art director and VFX supervisor work together on set, not separated across continents.

FAQs on Virtual Production in Vienna
What is Virtual Production and how does it work?
Virtual Production combines physical sets with digital real-time backgrounds on LED walls. Actors and camera operators therefore see the environment directly on set β including correct light incidence. In addition, time-consuming post-production work is eliminated. As the only provider in Europe, AV-PRO operates the Sony VERONA Stage mobile in Vienna.
What equipment do I need for a Virtual Production?
Professional Virtual Production requires a high-resolution LED wall, a rendering system, and calibrated camera technology. Precise camera tracking is also essential for convincing In-Camera VFX. AV-PRO therefore delivers the complete package: Sony VERONA LED Wall, Sony OCELLUS tracking, and Unreal Engine integration β including a dedicated operator in Vienna.
Is Virtual Production suitable for smaller productions?
Yes, Virtual Production is not just for large budgets. Commercials, music videos, and corporate productions often benefit even more, as location costs and CGI post-processing are eliminated. AV-PRO therefore offers scalable setups β from compact LED wall systems to the full Sony VERONA Stage in Vienna.
Does AV-Professional meet Green Producing requirements for Virtual Production?
Yes. Virtual Production significantly reduces the need for exterior locations and transport logistics. This measurably lowers the carbon footprint of a production. The mobile Sony VERONA system can also be set up locally in Vienna β without crew travel to international locations.
How much does a Virtual Production in Vienna cost?
Costs depend on configuration, shooting days, and the desired crew scope. As a rough guide, a single shooting day with a basic configuration starts in the mid four-figure range. We also provide a transparent, project-specific quote on request within 24 hours.
What is the difference between Virtual Production and Greenscreen?
Virtual Production replaces the greenscreen with a high-resolution LED wall featuring real-time rendering. This eliminates complex keying, spill correction, and post-processing. Directors and camera operators also see the final environment directly on set β scenes are therefore often ready to use immediately after filming.
How sustainable is Virtual Production really?
Very sustainable. A typical Virtual Production generates up to 70% less COβ than productions with exterior shoots β primarily by eliminating flights and location transport. It is also a measurable lever for Green Producing certifications such as the Austrian Ecolabel for Film.
Do I need experience with Unreal Engine?
No. AV-Professional handles the entire technical side β real-time rendering, tracking, and LED calibration. Your production therefore only needs to supply the digital backgrounds (assets). Alternatively, we can connect you with experienced Virtual Art Directors who develop the background environments for you.
How does the Sony VERONA differ from other LED walls?
The SONY VERONA is not a standard LED wall. It was developed specifically for Virtual Production and broadcast: 1.5 mm pixel pitch for close-ups, Brompton processing for precise calibration. SONY’s own software also seamlessly integrates multi-camera tracking. There is therefore no comparable system available for rent anywhere in the world β except in Japan.
What lead time is recommended for a Virtual Production booking?
We recommend a lead time of at least 4β6 weeks. This allows the production to be optimally prepared. For urgent productions, short-notice rental is possible subject to availability β please enquire directly.
